Mr. Raman Chieh founded in 2004 in Taiwan, China the company Taiwan Advanced Nanotech Inc. (TANBead). TANBead's focus is on products for nucleic acid purification and extraction, including reagent kits and automated nucleic acid extraction instruments, as well as magnetic nanoparticles. The instruments of the Maelstrom brand are used in molecular diagnostics and Life Science. They are subject to the special feature that nucleic acid extraction is fully automated, which can save a lot of labor and time.

Under Chieh's successful leadership, his team achieved the development of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) of uniform size. In 2007, he received the patent for this in China, and in 2014, he received additional patents for the US, EU, Canada, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

Maelstrom products are CE and FDA approved and have been sold to over 70 countries worldwide. The special feature of additional GMP certification, as well as triple ISO certification (ISO 9001:2008, ISO 13485:2016, ISO 13485:2012) distinguishes the products with a particularly strictly controlled quality.

Product portfolio

TANBeads product portfolio includes automated extraction instruments, ready-to-use extraction kits for DNA/RNA extraction from various sample materials such as blood, cells, tissues, plants, bacteria or viruses, as well as nanoparticles and consumables. The kits are intended for Maelstrom product application. Automated nucleic acid extraction can be performed in just a few steps. Auto Plates and Auto Tubes are available for this purpose.

Mag Nanoparticles

TANBead's innovative products are based on its advanced nanotechnology. This enables the production of uniformly sized magnetic nanoparticles, including superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) and ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO). Our partner has extensive knowledge in surface modification of nanoparticles, through synthesis with various functional groups, for molecular biology applications. The silica-coated SPIO can be used for nucleic acid extraction, while SPIO modified with affinity tags and functional groups can be used for protein purification and immunoprecipitation.

Blood RNA - TAB-M621A46-4x96

The extraction kit Blood RNA is used to extract the total RNA of a whole blood sample. Only 200 µl sample volume is required for the application.

For the application, the fresh blood samples are mixed with lysis buffer and incubated for 10 minutes at RT. Acid phenol and BCP are added sequentially to the samples and mixed. The samples are then centrifuged and the upper aqueous phase is collected as a sample and mixed with 2-propanol (IPA). In the final step, the automated TANBead nucleic acid extractor (Maelstorm series) is used to process and extract nucleic acid. During the process, the silica layer coating the magnetic beads adsorbs the nucleic acids from the samples and purifies them. At the end of the program, the purified nucleic acid is collected in a clean tube.

OptiPure Blood

The OptiPure Blood DNA extraction kit is used for the extraction of genomic DNA, from (frozen) whole blood samples or buffy coat (entire layer of white blood cells after centrifugation). A sample volume of about 250-300 µl is needed for the application.

The blood samples can be applied directly to the TANBead OptiPure Blood DNA Extraction kit with Proteinase K. Nucleic acid extraction can be performed using the automated TANBead nucleic acid extractor (Maelstorm series). The principle is based on the silica coated magnetic beads (see above) When the program ends, the purified nucleic acid is transferred to a clean tube.

Plant Tissue Total DNA - TAB-W613A46-4x96

The Plant Tissue Total DNA extraction kit is used to extract purified genomic DNA from various plant tissues. For this purpose, plant leaf tissue, e.g. papaya leaves, is crushed/grinded with 50-100 mg liquid nitrogen and then mixed with lysis buffer. The mixture is incubated at RT for 10 min and then centrifuged for 5 min, which removes the plant cell debris. The lysate is transferred to column #1 and extracted using the automated TANBead nucleic acid extractor (Maelstorm series). The principle is based on the silica coated magnetic beads (see above). To remove impurities, the sample is rinsed with wash buffer and then the purified genomic DNA is eluted with elution buffer. After completion of the program, the sample is transferred from column #6 to a new tube.
