As one unit of Athena Environmental Sciences Inc., it has therefore been producing high-quality biotechnological instruments and reagents for research, biopharmaceutical and industrial applications since 1994. The company's extensive product range is designed to improve protein expression, recovery and purification.

Athena ES pays particular attention to supporting the production of proteins that are difficult to express. If your host-vector system has a low or no protein yield, Athena ES products offer you a decisive advantage: You can avoid the costly and time-consuming development of an alternative expression system. The composition of the culture media increases both the amount of the accumulated protein and the biomass. Easy-to-use media optimization kits provide a quick and inexpensive way to identify the best available culture media for the production of a specific recombinant protein. Of course, Athena ES also offers lines of cultural media that are APF (Animal Pruduct Free) certified.

In addition, Athena Enzyme Systems developed ACES (Athena ES Complete Expression System), an alternative to conventional expression vectors. If conventional expression vectors do not provide enough protein, production can be increased in three different ways: by reducing the synthesis rate (= not overwhelming the cellular expression systems), exporting the protein into the periplasm or secreting the protein into the culture medium. The ACES kits can create a series of expression vectors that use these three alternative approaches to produce a recombinant protein.

Athena ES also has outstanding expertise in the field of cell culture media. The advanced serum-free media (SFM) are used for a variety of research purposes. They reduce contamination and eliminate potential sources of infectious agents. They are therefore particularly suitable for multiplying mammalian cells. Serum-free medium is used in studies on drug discovery, physiology and gene expression, among others. Athena also offers custom serum-free media manufacturing.
