Description: Quinine is a naturally occuring anti-malaria agent which acts as a potassium channel inhibitor with an IC50 of 169 uM, also has antipyretic (fever-reducing), analgesic (painkilling), anti-inflammatory properties and a bitter taste. It is a stereoisomer of of quinidine which contains an aromatic quinoline and a bicyclic quinuclidine. Quinine prevents formation of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) as well as the subsequent hepatic DNA fragmentation and liver enzyme leakage. Quinine elicits Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) concentrated in the medial third of the nucleus.
