VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) receptor 1 (VEGFR1) also known as Flt-1 is a tyrosine-kinase receptor expressed by almost all vascular endothelial cells and by some peripheral blood monocytes which acts as a receptor for members of the VEGF protein family playing a key role in vascular development and the regulation of vascular permeability. The soluble form of VEGFR1 (sVEGFR1/sFlt-1) is generated by differential splicing of the VEGFR1 mRNA and contains the VEGF-binding domain as well as the 31 amino acid stretch at the C-terminal region. sVEGFR1 is a potential regulator of angiogenesis and is expressed abundantly in the trophoblast layer of the placenta and is implicated in the generation of pre-eclampsia or intra-uterine growth retardation.
