Bio Background |
The inhibin beta B subunit joins the alpha subunit toform a pituitary FSH secretion inhibitor. Inhibin has been shownto regulate gonadal stromal cell proliferation negatively and tohave tumour-suppressor activity. In addition, serum levels ofinhibin have been shown to reflect the size of granulosa-celltumors and can therefore be used as a marker for primary as well asrecurrent disease. Because expression in gonadal and variousextragonadal tissues may vary severalfold in a tissue-specificfashion, it is proposed that inhibin may be both agrowth/differentiation factor and a hormone. Furthermore, the betaB subunit forms a homodimer, activin B, and also joins with thebeta A subunit to form a heterodimer, activin AB, both of whichstimulate FSH secretion. |
