This gene encodes a protein expressed in thesuprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) circadian clock that may function asthe output component of the circadian clock. The secreted form ofthe encoded protein may also serve as a chemoattractant forneuronal precursor cells in the olfactory bulb. Proteins from othervertebrates which are similar to this gene product were isolatedbased on homology to snake venom and secretions from frog skin, andhave been shown to have diverse functions. Mutations in this geneare associated with Kallmann syndrome 4. Multiple transcriptvariants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene.
