Background	The protein encoded by this gene is a small glycoproteininvolved in the catabolism of lipid-modified proteins duringlysosomal degradation. The encoded enzyme removes thioester-linkedfatty acyl groups such as palmitate from cysteine residues. Defectsin this gene are a cause of infantile neuronal ceroidlipofuscinosis 1 (CLN1, or INCL) and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis4 (CLN4). Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms havebeen found for this gene.
